Description
This article is a response to an article published in the Washington Post which points out the inherent irony in the U.S. government's extension of an invitation to China to participate in the Columbian Exposition, despite the existence of the Chinese Exclusion Act.
While the Washington Post criticized Chinese Exclusion, the Los Angeles Times writer stated that the law would still allow upper-class Chinese tourists to visit the fair and that the laws should not be changed to allow Chinese "settlement" in the United States. As a California newspaper, the Los Angeles Times was much more anti-Chinese than many publications from the east coast such as the Washington Post and Harper's Weekly.
